Scholarships
The Department of English at Baylor University offers many scholarships to undergraduate students. Some are based on merit, while others are based on need. Whatever your situation, consider applying for one of our many scholarships.
How to Apply
The following scholarships are available to undergraduate students with majors in the Department of English. They are granted after applications are reviewed by the Scholarship Committee and awarded in the spring for the following academic year. Applications open March 1 and close April 1 every spring semester.
Students only need to submit one application to be considered for scholarships.
Along with your completed application, include the following supporting materials:
- Your resume;
- Your unofficial transcripts; and
- A short essay explaining interest in the major, future plans, and reasons for seeking funding.

Aileen Griffin English Scholarship
A merit and need-based scholarship open to English or English Education majors.
Lois Murray-Browning Scholarship
A merit and need-based scholarship open to English majors.
Preference is given to undergraduate students engaged in scholarship on the Brownings.
M/M Job Rodgers Scholarship
A merit-based scholarship open to English majors who are classified as Seniors.
Charles & Cornelia Smith Scholarship
A merit and need-based scholarship open to English, Linguistics, or Professional Writing & Rhetoric majors.
Preference is given to students transferring from Wake Forest University.
Loyd & Lee Turner Scholarship
A merit-based scholarship open to English majors.
R.A. & Sadye Wilson Scholarship
A merit and need-based scholarship open to English majors.
John L. Howard Family Scholarship
A merit-based scholarship open to English, Linguistics, or Professional Writing & Rhetoric majors.
Lou & Mabel Hatter English Scholarship
A merit and need-based scholarship open to English majors who are classified as Juniors or Seniors.
Preference is given to students with a high GPA and who demonstrate good moral character.
Edna Haney English Scholarship
A merit and need-based scholarship open to English or English Education majors who are classified as incoming freshmen.
Preference is given to students from 1) Illinois; 2) Iowa, South Dakota, Arkansas, Mississippi, or Kentucky; 3) the Midwest; 4) Texas.
Renewable with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Martha Emmons Scholarship
A merit and need-based scholarship open to English, Linguistics, or Professional Writing & Rhetoric majors.
James & Carol Parker English Scholarship
A merit and need-based scholarship open to English majors.
James & Carol Parker Academic English Scholarship
A merit-based scholarship open to English majors.
Robert Cooley & Dr. Carolyn Cooley Scholarship
A merit-based scholarship open to English majors who are classified as Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
