Bio
Kristen Pond is an Associate Professor in English. Her research focuses on forms of the nineteenth-century novel, especially realism and sensation fiction, and life writing such as letters, journals, and autobiographies. Her research also engages with theories such as rhetorical narrative theory, feminism, and most recently ecocriticism and disability studies. Kristen’s publications examine the writing of several prominent Victorian women authors, including George Eliot, Charlotte Brontë, and Harriet Martineau. In addition to many journal articles, Kristen’s work on these writers can be found in the Palgrave Encyclopedia on Women Writers, the Routledge Companion to George Eliot, and the Broadview Anthology. Kristen frequently presents at national conferences such as NAVSA, BWWC, and MVSA. Kristen has also co-chaired two conferences, the British Women Writers Conference at Baylor University in the spring of 2022 and the Cultures of Correspondence symposium at Baylor University in the spring of 2025. Her book, Strangers and the Enchantment of Space in Victorian Fiction, 1830–1865, was published in fall of 2023. Her current book project on women and walking brings together her recent research interests in Victorian fiction, life writing, gender and disability studies, and the environment.
Kristen also has robust teaching and administrative roles. She was awarded the Margarett Root Brown Chair in Robert Browning and Victorian Studies at the Armstrong Browning Library in 2023 and currently holds this chair position. She is also editor of Victorians: A Journal of Culture and Literature. Kristen teaches courses in British Literature, narrative form, and women's writing. In addition to teaching many undergraduates, she is a member of the graduate faculty and enjoys working with graduate students. She has directed 16 MA theses and PhD dissertations, in addition to serving on 13 thesis and dissertation committees.
